Same System, Three Formats

U.S. Soccer PDI-aligned. Same principles, same roles โ€” scaled from 7v7 through 11v11 as players develop.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Age Progression by Zone

U.S. Soccer mandates three developmental formats. Every age group learns the same core system โ€” the formation scales as the pitch and player count grow.

7v7 Zone
2-3-1
U9-U10 ยท 6 outfield + GK
9v9 Zone
3-2-3
U11-U12 ยท 8 outfield + GK
11v11 Zone
4-2-3-1
U13+ ยท 10 outfield + GK

โ†”๏ธ In Possession / Out of Possession

The core principle that transfers across every format. Everything else follows from it โ€” U.S. Soccer PDI.

In Possession โ†’ Expand

Spread wide. Stretch the opponent. Create space behind. Support the ball ahead, side, and behind.

Out of Possession โ†’ Compact

Compress centrally. Protect the middle. The forward is the first defender โ€” trigger the press.

See each zone's scenario diagrams below for how this plays out in goal kicks, attacking shape, defending shape, corners, and free kicks.

7v7 Zone ยท U9-U10

2-3-1 โ€” Scenarios

6 outfield + goalkeeper. The foundation system โ€” every scenario applies the same in-possession / out-of-possession principles.

Same from 7v7: In possession = expand, out of possession = compact. #10 between lines (same as the 2-3-1 center mid). Full-backs provide width. Cover behind the press.
